Gone are the days where exciting vegetarian offerings were slim-pickings. Root’d makes me believe that modern vegetarian cuisine is enjoying somewhat of a Golden Age, with plenty of veggie-centric restaurants cropping up in city, celebrating all-things-veggie. Showcasing imaginative flavor combinations, bold ingredients and all-around good food, Root’d is sure to delight all palates—from staunch vegans to fussy foodies to meat-and-potato fiends.
Root’d has a chic minimalist interior and whimsical pervasive greenery, much plastic, nevertheless it creates a sultry wholesome dining atmosphere. The cafe is tiny but there’s a certain warmth it exudes from the moment you step foot into the space. The menu is a very eccentric read where you can find a ton of delicious and inventive meat-free fillers that will tempt you to extensively with plenty of plant-forward eats as well as some bewildering combinations of food.
Several items on the menu are “deceptively vegetarian, meat-eaters and devout vegans alike will be wowed by the innovative menu, take the Pepperoni Pizza for instance, yes there’s vegetarian pepperoni on it with a “secret” ingredient which is best discovered at the restaurant and we aren’t giving out the spoilers but the pizzas is stupendously meaty and Cheesey and delicious.
While this one is a complete mystery, the Mushroom Pizza is what tickles my spot in every sense. Loaded with just pure Mushroom flavour and some garlic, the shiitake shines through every bite like a star, full of flavour and perfectly embedded in cheese. Bellisama!
Meatballs with Spaghetti showcases fresh, seasonal ingredients and progressive pairings—think chunky Meatballs of spiced beans draped in rich aromatic crimson marinara spooned over homemade olive oil tossed spaghetti rounded off with fresh herbs and greens.
The Pulled Pork Burger is next up and even more astounding. What could possibly be better than real rich pulled pork? Well these guys have come pretty close with a vegan option, where the pulled pork is substituted with stringy vegetables, slow cooked in a sweet sweet sauce and encased between a brioche bun.
Savoury Waffles were the Piece de resistance where the waffles are made with puff pastry, with bits of ricotta, pumpkin in the gooey centre and finished off with pumpkin seeds and a drizzle of sriracha. Now that’s innovative genius, such a complex dish that delivered multiple foodgasms in the first go!
We finished our rather stupendously brilliant meal with an indulgence overload that blew our minds further where we weren’t expecting any more fireworks, because c’mon these guys can’t ace every dish but I was pleasantly wrong.
Banana Bread with fruit and Caramel was a warm dream of sweet sticky happiness and extremely worthwhile calories. Dense and sweet and addictively so, I was in a trance!
Vegetarianism has achieved complete culinary parity with the traditional carnivore’s diet, and the new vegetarian cooking here is intersecting with the growth of an increasingly popular locavore food scene to create a unique, brilliant, Globally -accented cuisine.
